I'm going to school to be a Paralegal. I'm not sure how LinkedIn really works yet but i'm wondering if it will help me be in contact with any important people regarding my career??
LinkedIn is basically like Facebook or Myspace, but mainly for professional networks, not social ones.
You create your account on LinkedIn much the same way you would for Facebook. LinkedIn then recommends associates(friends) based on what companies you’ve worked at, where you went to school, etc. You can also search for people, just like on Facebook. Normally you’ll add friends, coworkers, managers, classmates, etc. to your network.
If you are looking for a job, you can post your resume and other information. People in your network can see this, which can be helpful if their company is looking for someone like you. Many companies offer referral bonuses for employees who help fill a position with someone they know.
You can also post status updates, although these tend to be more along the lines of “finished big project at school” as opposed to “yay! it’s friday let’s get drunk, lol!” or “hey, my cat did something really funny today…”
Job recruiters often use LinkedIn to find candidates for their clients, and since you can look at the recruiter’s network, you can find out what companies he’s worked with and what sorts of positions he’s helped fill.
This YouTube video does an excellent job of explaining LinkedIn:
