CrossClimb #914: Start-to-Finish Logic
This ladder rewards disciplined ordering. Each answer has four letters, and every move changes exactly one letter in the same position. Solve the clues first, then let the letter pattern determine the climb.
Solving the Clues
The five middle clues resolve cleanly:
- What a gondolier uses for propulsion:
POLE - Heap:
PILE - You might use it on your nails:
FILE - ___-in-the-blank:
FILL - What someone must pay before leaving the restaurant:
BILL
At this stage, the answers are not yet in clue order. The key is to compare neighboring words and identify the one-letter bridges.
The Ladder, One Swap at a Time
1. POKE to POLE
The compound clue supplies the endpoint POKE. Moving to POLE swaps the third letter: K becomes L.
2. POLE to PILE
The second letter changes: O becomes I. The result, PILE, matches “Heap.”
3. PILE to FILE
Now the first letter shifts: P becomes F. That produces FILE, something commonly used on nails.
4. FILE to FILL
The final letter is swapped: E becomes L. The new word completes “fill-in-the-blank.”
5. FILL to BILL
Again, only the first position changes: F becomes B. BILL fits the restaurant-payment clue.
6. BILL to BALL
The second letter changes: I becomes A. This completes the lower endpoint and preserves the one-letter rule.
The Final Compound Connection
The endpoint words are POKE and BALL. Together they form Poké Ball, the sphere used to catch creatures in the Pokémon game series.
The compound clue is more than a final definition. It identifies both bookends while the ladder verifies them mechanically. The complete route is:
POKE → POLE → PILE → FILE → FILL → BILL → BALL
The aha moment is seeing that the clues and structure reinforce each other: every answer is independently fair, yet each letter swap narrows the next move until the final compound pair locks the entire climb into place.
