The Clue

"Say, why are you jay-walking around and judging people?" (4)

Definition

Our definition here is 'judging people', and our answer will be a word for judging people.

Indicator

This clue's indicators are 'Say' and 'walking around'. 'Say' is a homophone indicator, telling us to say some neighbouring words (or their synonyms) aloud, hear what they sound like and replace them with their soundalikes. 'walking around' is a reversal indicator. It could just as easily be an anagram indicator (letters are wandering) and the clue still works, but here the reordering of letters is a straight reversal - the letters are walking around, looping to reverse themselves.

Fodder

This clue's fodder is 'why are you jay'. We'll use these words to construct our answer, as guided by the clue's indicator(s).
