The Clue

"Homebody cut short island-hopping?" (5)

Definition

Our definition here is 'Homebody', and the question mark on our clue is flagging that we should consider a pun. Our answer will be a homebody, of sorts.

Indicator

This clue's indicators are 'cut short' and 'hopping'. 'Cut short' is a deletion indicator guiding us to take some neighbouring fodder and delete a bit (keeping the rest). 'hopping' is an anagram indicator - not the most obvious one, and we could have gone with 'travels' as a safer option - but 'hopping' describes movement, activity and agitation, all good themes for an anagram indicator.

Fodder

This clue's fodder is 'island'. We'll use these letters (or some of them) to construct our answer, as guided by the clue's indicator(s).

The Answer

SNAIL
